What is Grow Bag?

A grow bag is a planter filled with a growing medium and used for growing plants, usually tomatoes or other salad crops. Originally made of plastic, modern bags are also made from jute or fabric. The growing medium is usually based on a soilless organic material such as peat, coir, composted green waste, composted bark or composted wood chips, or a mixture of these. Various nutrients are added, sufficient for one season's growing, so frequently only planting and watering are required of the end-user.

Advantages of Grow Bags

Grow bags have a lot going for them. Here are some reasons that you should throw plastic pots away and switch over to using grow bags.

They can be used anywhere

Grow bags are great to use primarily because they can be used anywhere. If you live in a rental or have a small balcony, you can grow vegetables and plants easily in them. This way if you move, you can easily take your grow bags with you.

You can move them around

One of the biggest advantages to grow bags is that they're easy to move around, as they are lighter than plastic pots and have handles to move them from place to place. You can really move them all around while still keeping your plants safe.

Healthier root systems are formed

Roots are less likely to circle, which is also referred to as root bound since they weren't grown in a plastic pot, which is what causes the roots to coil. This makes the plants easier to prune when it comes time.

They regulate the temperature

Plastic pots can get hot when placed in the sun. Since grow bags are made of plastic or other breathable materials, you don't need to worry about them overheating. Excess heat easily escapes from the grow bag material.

You can't overwater them

Grow bags will release any extra water through holes in the material. This avoids mold and fungus that can happen when overwatering a plant in a plastic container. Since they're impossible to overwater, you've already got a leg up on a common gardening issue.

They're easy to store

Plastic pots take up a lot of room to store whether they're empty or full. Grow bags fold flat when they're empty and can easily be stored until you need them. This works great for those who are tight on space.

Some biodegrade

Some grow bags are completely biodegradable, so if you choose to plant them in the ground, they'll break down in the soil. It's a great way to get your plants strong in the beginning before it has time to grow into the ground.

You don't have to worry about your ground soil

Since you'll be adding the soil of your choice to the grow bags, you don't need to worry about the quality of your ground soil, it won't be interacting with whatever you have in the grow bag. If you're looking to fertilize your plants, this is a wonderful way to do it.

You'll save time

Grow bags make quick work out of planting, so you're going to save yourself some time.

Grow Bags: Everything You Need to Know!

Because grow bags allow for excellent drainage, you should place a tray or protective layer between them and the surface they are sitting on if you are worried about water damage. This is particularly important if you use grow bags indoors to avoid moisture damage to your floors or furniture.

These grow bags can be placed on the ground or on a deck outside. Some people choose to place them up on a rack or pallet to increase drainage and prevent encroachment of weeds.

If you wish to use a tray or saucer underneath a grow bag, we recommend using one filled with gravel or decorative rocks. Doing so will help prevent any rot or mold growth from setting the bag in stagnant water.

Different Types and Sizes of Grow Bags

Fabric Grow Bags

Made from breathable fabric, these are the most popular type of garden grow bags. They provide excellent drainage and air circulation, which promotes healthy root growth and prevents issues like root rot. These bags are often reusable, and they come in various sizes to suit different gardening needs.

Plastic Grow Bags

Made from durable polyethylene, these grow bags are a more affordable option compared to fabric grow bags. While they offer less breathability, they are highly durable and can face harsh weather conditions. They are also easy to clean and can be reused multiple times, making them a practical choice for many gardeners.

Biodegradable Grow Bags

Made from natural materials like jute or coir, these grow bags are eco-friendly options that decompose over time. They are ideal for environmentally conscious gardeners who want to reduce their plastic use. As the plants grow, the roots can penetrate through the material, allowing for seamless planting directly into the ground without disturbing the root system.

Best Size for Grow Bags

The correct sized bag is essential to successfully grow plants in grow bags. Here is a simple and basic guide to help you choose the right size grow bag:

3-Gallon Bags – If you want to plant one or two smaller plants such as pepper plants the 3-gallon bag will be exactly what you need.

5-Gallon Bags – For a big majority of your planting needs the five-gallon bags will be perfect. You can use this size of bag for virtually any plants from potatoes to small trees.

10-Gallon Bags – if you are hoping to grow several plants consider using the extra-large ten gallon grow bag. This size of bag is used for people that have ample space. You can grow numerous potato plants or a variety of salad greens in this bag.

100-Gallon Bags – This gigantic grow bag might seem excessive to some, but it is perfect for those who want to create a big garden and grow a multitude of plants.

How to Choose the Right Grow Bag

When choosing the right grow bag for your plants, there are several factors to consider to ensure the best possible environment for growth. Here are some tips to help you choose the right grow bags:

Size: Consider the size of the grow bag in relation to the size of the plant you will be growing. Make sure the grow bag is large enough to accommodate the root system of the plant and allow for proper growth.

Material: Grow bags are typically made from materials like fabric, plastic, or biodegradable materials. Fabric grow bags are breathable and promote better air circulation and drainage, while plastic grow bags are more durable and retain moisture well.

Drainage: Proper drainage is essential for healthy plant growth. Look for grow bags with drainage holes or aeration features to prevent waterlogged soil.

Handles: Some grow bags come with handles, making them easier to move around. This can be helpful if you need to move your plants indoors or outdoors depending on the weather.

Durability: Consider the durability of the grow bag, especially if you plan to reuse it. Fabric grow bags are usually more durable than plastic bags and can last multiple growing seasons.

Price: Compare prices of different grow bags to find one that fits your budget. Keep in mind that higher-quality grow bags may cost more but can provide better results in the long run.

FAQ

Q: What do grow bags do?

A: Grow bags are like pop-up mini raised gardens that allow me to temporarily add growing space. When I don't need that space anymore, I can empty the bags and put them in storage. Even though I have a large raised bed garden, I use grow bags as a quick and easy way to add more space to my garden.

Q: Are grow bags any good?

A: Grow bags are not only better than pots when it comes to developing root structures of trees. Pots also negatively affect plants that grow in them in other ways. For one thing, roots tend to grow in tight circles inside of pots.

Q: How long will grow bags last?

A: Grow bags are great for gardens of all sizes, both indoors and outdoors. You can start a plant in a smaller grow bag and move it to a larger grow bag as the plant reaches maturity. Grow bags are predicted to last 7 to 8 seasons, but with good care, they can last for much longer.

Q: Can I put grow bags directly on the ground?

A: Just put them directly on the soil, fill and plant them as usual. To create a raised garden bed out of grow bags, you can place them on the ground.

Q: Should I plant tomatoes in grow bags or pots?

A: We advise growing your tomato plants in a tomato grow bag. This is because you can be sure that the soil conditions in the grow bag are ideal for the tomato plants. It is a good idea to cut some holes in the bottom of the grow-bag before planting as this provides drainage to prevent water-logging.

Q: How often should I water grow bags?

A: Make sure to keep the soil in your grow bags moist because if it dries completely, the roots can die. This may mean daily or twice daily watering during the hottest months of the year.

Q: Can you overwater in grow bags?

A: No, it is pretty much impossible to overwater a grow bag. The air circulation on all sides of the plants roots means they have access to oxygen and that any excess water can quickly drain and evaporate away. For these reasons grow bags do benefit from more frequent waterings in drier climates.

Q: Do you put holes in grow bags?

A: Pierce the base of bag for drainage and cut out the pre-marked planting squares or, if you are planting rows of salads, cut out a long rectangle. Scoop out compost from each square leaving a hole big enough for the root ball of your plant. Put a plant in each hole and refill around it with compost.

Q: Do grow bags cause root rot?

A: They do the opposite, as they're not the best water retainers. You will need to water your grow bag much more regularly than a solid container or raised bed.

Q: Which type of grow bag is best?

A: Fabric Grow Bags: Fabric grow bags are made from natural materials such as cotton, jute, hemp, or wool. They are breathable, which means that they allow air and water to flow through them easily. This makes them ideal for growing vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers.

Q: Can you grow cucumbers in a grow bag?

A: You can also plant two cucumbers in a growing bag. To plant in the ground – either outdoors or in a greenhouse border or polytunnel, prepare the soil then plant 30cm apart, firming in gently and watering well.

Q: Is a 5 gallon grow bag big enough for tomatoes?

A: For determinate tomato plants, a 5-gallon grow bag can be sufficient, while indeterminate tomato plants may require a larger 10-gallon grow bag or larger.

Q: Do grow bags need saucers?

A: When I've used grow bags/root pouches I didn't bother with saucers. But do be mindful of what you're placing the bags on if you're concerned about staining. My practice was simply to move the grow bag to the side and hose down the surface underneath every now and then.

Q: Can I reuse my grow bags?

A: Many people have made the economical decision to switch out their plastic pots for fabric grow bags. Apart from helping the environment, fabric planters offer you and your plants tons of benefits. One of the biggest advantages is the fact that you can wash and reuse fabric grow bags multiple times.

Q: What is the lifespan of a grow bag?

A: Light weight and portable, they are very easy to carry and shift. The grow bags will last for at least 5 years of use and can be recycled after use.

Q: What color grow bag is best?

A: While the color of the grow bag itself may not directly affect plant growth, it can have an indirect impact. Dark colored grow bags can absorb more heat from the sun, which can be beneficial for plants that prefer warmer temperatures.

Q: Are tomato grow bags worth it?

A: Tomatoes are, as experts know, hungry plants. One of the best ways to ensure that they get the nourishment they need is to grow them in a greenhouse, and in grow bags with fresh compost every year. The soil left over from a season's growing can be used to help condition the rest of your garden or plot.

Q: Should I put rocks in the bottom of my grow bag?

A: Rocks in the bottom of containers do not contribute to better draining soils and healthier plants.

Q: Are grow bags just compost?

A: For those who aren't familiar, a grow bag is simply a long, compost-filled plastic sack into which (usually) two or three season-long fruiting vegetables are planted.

Q: How many plants per grow bag?

A: The number of plants you can grow in a 15-gallon grow bag depends on several factors such as the size of the plants, the species, and their growth habits. For vegetables and herbs, you can typically grow 1 to 2 plants per 15-gallon bag. For example, you could grow 2 tomato plants, or 1 pepper plant and 1 eggplant.
