What are Mini Greenhouses?
A mini greenhouse is a generic term that encompasses a wide variety of professional and homemade designs. Mini greenhouses can be tall or short, but generally take up less than about 10 square feet (1 sq. m.) of ground or floor space. Many gardeners use them in place of cold frames to start seedlings earlier than normal for their area, or indoors to propagate plants that need high humidity. Commercial mini greenhouses are usually constructed of metal or plastic pipe, with between one and three shelves stacked one atop the other. The pipe frame is fitted with a plastic cover containing a door that unzips to allow the grower access to their plants. Homemade mini greenhouses may be as simple as a greenhouse flat fitted with a makeshift wire frame, pushed into a turkey bag, and sealed tightly.

The Benefits of Mini Greenhouses
A mini greenhouse is not just a way to save money or get a Greenhouse for small gardens. There are plenty more reasons why you might opt for a compact greenhouse. Here are just some of the best reasons to buy a mini greenhouse.
Protect your flowers and plants
Any Greenhouse space is better than none. In the depths of winter, putting your most delicate pots and planters in a Greenhouse can protect your plants. Even if you don’t heat the interior, a Greenhouse provides essential insulation. In extreme cold weather, it could even help to prevent ceramic and terracotta pots from cracking due to the freeze-thaw effect.
Grow a variety of things all year round
If you’re wondering what to grow in a mini greenhouse, the answer is a long list. There are all kinds of plants and vegetables that will thrive in a compact Greenhouse space. You could even find it possible to produce your favourite fruits and vegetables out of season, if you control the environment in your Greenhouse well enough.
Allows you to control the environment
Small Greenhouse ventilation is often as easy as opening a window, as the smaller interior will benefit more quickly from fresh air coming in. If you choose to add heaters or coolers, again you can use a smaller capacity unit, while still controlling the environment inside your Greenhouse efficiently.
Freedom with your favourite hobby
If you don’t feel ready to commit to a large greenhouse, We’ll help you to decide what to grow in a small Greenhouse and take full advantage of the height of your glasshouse – something gardeners often neglect – so you get the best use not only of the floor area, but of the full volume of your growing space.
Save money
Lean-to greenhouses can save money by building off of an existing garden wall or side of your house, but a free standing small Greenhouse still offers excellent value for money, especially if you buy a small Greenhouse with good build quality.
Become more independent
Grow Your Own is all about independence and self-sufficiency. But you don’t have to grow edible fruits and vegetables for your small Greenhouse to help you feel less dependent on others. Having somewhere to get on with your gardening, whatever the weather, all year round, can be a huge boost to mental health.

Mini greenhouses aren't designed for every type of gardening task, but for those things they're good at, they're very handy indeed. Seed starting is one of the greatest strengths of mini greenhouses, especially if you use one with a single shelf. Multiple shelf units must be placed in an ideal location to prevent shading the seedlings you're trying to grow. They're also extremely useful when you want to clone plants that are already in your landscape - the plastic covers will trap humidity, making it more likely that a cutting or graft takes successfully. These small structures require a great deal more care than a standard greenhouse though, since heat and high levels of humidity can build rapidly. Monitor temperatures closely, especially if your mini greenhouse is outdoors, and watch the humidity levels. Humidity is great for many plants, but it can lead to fungal disease and root rots as well. Plants for mini greenhouses aren't limited to full sun annuals or easy-to-start veggies. If you create the right microclimate inside your mini greenhouse, you can grow nearly anything. Annuals, vegetables, and fruits are only the beginning - as you get better at controlling conditions, try adding mini greenhouses for orchids, cacti, or even carnivorous plants. Your efforts will be rewarded with gorgeous blooms that few growers ever get to experience.
Mini Greenhouses Growing
In the first section of this Guide to Mini greenhouse growing, we look at what can be grown in a Mini greenhouse.
Spring
In the early Spring the mini greenhouse can be full of young plants, growing on ready for later transplanting into the garden. Many garden centres offer tiny plug plants at the very start of the season. These can be grown on inside the Mini greenhouse. Many plants, especially salad crops, can be grown direct from seed, in fact with a mini greenhouse you can look forward to fresh salads pretty much all through the year.
Summer
In the Summer, the Mini greenhouse can be used for protected crops such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and aubergines. As other plants are planted out, the space left can be used for home grown Mediterranean crops.
Autumn
In Autumn time cuttings from fuchsias and geraniums can be taken to provide plant material for next year. Salad crops such as lettuce can be planted in the mini greenhouse to ensure a steady supply during the Winter months. Vegetables such as Spring cabbage can be grown on ready for planting out.
Winter
During the Winter months, the Mini greenhouse can be used to over-winter more delicate plants such as geraniums and fuchsias. Bulbs for Winter decoration can also be brought on in the mini greenhouse.
Pick A Site For Mini Greenhouses
The foundation of a thriving mini greenhouse begins with its placement. The direction it faces can significantly impact the growth and health of your plants:

South-facing
In our experience, this is the gold standard for greenhouse positioning, offering ample sunlight throughout the day, and ensuring a consistent and warm environment for a wide variety of plants.
East-facing
Ideal for capturing the gentle morning sun, an east-facing site provides light without the intense heat of the afternoon, perfect for seedlings and delicate plants.
West-facing
While it receives strong afternoon sun, a west-facing orientation can be beneficial for plants that thrive in the evening warmth but may require shading solutions to mitigate the intense late-day rays.
North-facing
Generally the least preferred due to limited direct sunlight, a north-facing site can still be suitable for shade-tolerant plants and in regions with very hot climates, offering a cooler environment.

What to Look for When Buying a Mini Greenhouse
Size
The size of the mini greenhouse you choose should align with both the physical space you have available and your gardening goals.
Sturdy Frame
The durability of your mini greenhouse largely depends on the strength of its frame. In regions where weather can be unpredictable, a sturdy frame is non-negotiable. Ensure the frame is capable of supporting not just the cover but also any shelving, plants, and additional accessories you plan to add.
Ventilation
From our years of experience, proper ventilation is key to preventing overheating and ensuring a healthy environment for your plants. Look for greenhouses with adjustable vents, doors, or windows that can be opened to regulate the internal climate.
This feature is particularly important during the warmer months when temperatures inside the greenhouse can quickly escalate. Some models come with automatic vent openers, which adjust the ventilation based on the temperature, offering convenience and peace of mind.
Cover Material
The cover material of your mini greenhouse affects its insulation properties and the amount of light that reaches your plants.
Polycarbonate panels are known for their durability, excellent light transmission, and good insulation. Alternatively, polyethylene covers are more affordable and lightweight but may need to be replaced more frequently.
Consider the light needs of your plants and your local climate when choosing the cover material.
Portability
If you anticipate the need to move your greenhouse, whether for seasonal changes or to chase the optimal sunlight, portability becomes a significant factor.
